Just Breathe

I was sitting in a training class not long ago when the speaker asked us to close our eyes. She walked us through less than a minute of instruction designed to help us pay attention to our breathing.  I followed her prompts, listening to the sound of my breathing, paying attention to my heartbeat, noticing the span of time between the top of the inhale and the release of the exhale.  Just a few short seconds, but it made a tremendous difference in my mood and sense of well-being.

Deep breathing benefits the body by lowering blood pressure and relaxing muscles. It also relaxes the brain and causes the heart rate to slow down. With each exhale following a deep breath, our bodies release carbon dioxide. Did you also know it cleanses the lymphatic system of toxins?  Or how about that it helps people with insomnia?  Could it also help in losing weight?

This week, I want to learn more about the benefits of deep breathing.  Don't worry, I'll share anything I learn with you, too!

Enjoy your week.  Enjoy this blog.
