I’ve always been a fan of lemons.  They make me happy.  I think of the nipples on each end as “parenthesis” lines on a smile.  Their yellow skins seem lit from the inside.  But it wasn’t until I began reading the book Sexy Forever by Suzanne Somers that I realized how important they were to a healthy lifestyle.

We live in a day and age where we know more about fat and calories than we ever have.  And we invest more in trying to control those fat and calories than we ever have (estimated costs of $40 billion per year in the US).  Yet we weigh more than we ever have, too.  (Two-thirds of American adults are either obese or overweight. In 1991, no state had an obesity rate above 20 percent. In 1980, the national average for adult obesity was 15 percent.)

According to Somers, our biggest problem is the amount of toxins in our systems.

We find toxins in the air we breathe and the land we till.  Toxins are absorbed through our skin as we apply moisturizers and cosmetics. The chemicals we use to clean our homes, the synthetic medications we consume to feel and perform better, even the food we eat in attempts to reach our ideal weight can work against us as our systems become laden with the burden of flushing out the toxins intent on taking over our lives.

There’s hope in the lemon, among many other things.

This week, I’ve decided to focus on the benefits of this happy fruit.  I’ll give you ideas on how you can incorporate lemons and lemon juice in your everyday lives to improve your body’s function, to naturalize your household cleaning, and to enhance the health of your skin and hair.

Enjoy your week.  Enjoy this blog.
